Last Wednesday the Poole Pairs League at the Dorset Table
This time 22 players turned up to play the Drawn Doubles
Championship. These players were divided into two groups
with the 11 top players into one group and the rest players
into a second group. Then one top player was drawn a partner
from the second group forming eleven pairs. Now these 11 pairs
were divided into three groups of four and one group of two pairs.
Group 1 was made up of the following pairs: Max Bannon with Dean Wedderburn, Stuart Burton with Jamie Saunders and Micky Pritchard with Will Funnell. This group saw very close matches but in the end Stuart Burton & Jamie Saunders won and Max Bannon & Dean Wedderburn came second.
Group 2 consisted of the following pairs: Mieszko Biela with Grant Dimond, Arthur Lomax with Ron Danville and Jamie Menzel with Jake Warry. Again, the matches of this group were very close but the group was won by Arthur Lomax & Ron Danville and runners-up were Jamie Menzel & Jake Warry.
Group 3 contained the following pairs: Owen White with Pete White, James Hamilton with Jon Ferguson and Josh Wedderburn with Timothy Su. The winner of this group was James Hamilton & Jon Ferguson and the runners-up were Owen White & Pete White.
As said before group 4 comprised only two pairs which were Sam Gregson with Andy Tipsana and Joe Sparks with Ian Tipsana. The match between these two pairs were won by Sam Gregson & Andy Tipsana.
The winners and runners-up of each group qualified for the next round and the third placed of the first three groups played a consolation round. In this consolation round the three pairs were put into one group and played a round-robin to find out their final position. This group consisted of the following pairs: Micky Pritchard & Will Funnell, Josh Wedderburn & Timothy Su and Mieszko Biela & Grant Dimond. In the end, Micky & Will came first, Josh & Timothy came second and Mieszko & Grant came third.
In the Quarterfinals Stuart Burton & Jamie Saunders had to play Jamie Menzel & Jake Warry, James Hamilton & Jon Ferguson had to play Joe Sparks & Ian Tipsana, Arthur Lomax & Ron Danville had to play Max Bannon & Dean Wedderburn and Sam Gregson & Andy Tipsana had to play Owen White & Pete White. The following pairs won their matches and therefore progressed to the semi-finals: Stuart & Jamie, James & Jon, Arthur & Ron and Owen & Pete.
The first semi-final was played between Stuart Burton & Jamie Saunders and James Hamilton & Jon Ferguson. Stuart & Jamie proved to be too strong for James & Jon and therefore marched into the final of the Drawn Doubles Championship. The second semi-final saw Arthur Lomax & Ron Danville playing Owen White & Pete White. The match was easily won by Owen & Pete which meant that they had progressed to the final.
In the final Owen & Pete won the first game but Stuart & Jamie came back winning the second game. The third game was, again, won by Owen & Pete. The fourth game saw Stuart & Jamie working very hard but unfortunately lost 9/11. That meant that Owen White & Pete White are the Drawn Doubles Champions of 2016.
